TIME TIMER USES
TIME TIMER USE
Setting TIME TIMERS Use your finger to gently move the disc counter-clockwise and so set the required time, in red, on the Time Timer face. Then, as time elapses, the red portion gets smaller and smaller (moving clockwise) until no red is visible indicating that the set time period has ended. The disc may be gently moved clock- or counter clockwise without harming the mechanism. .
Use Time Timers to:
- Time tests and exams
- Measure study periods and lunch breaks.
- Show time left to play, get ready or clean up
- Time counselling sessions and exercises
- Build self-esteem by allowing self-monitoring
- Overseeing speech, hearing and vision therapies
- Memory prompting for medications, appointments, etc.
- Solve the morning kitchen/breakfast crisis!
Meeting Special Needs The Time Timer provides the ability to judge how much time is left without having to know how to tell time. The products operate with high colour resolution, large dial numbers, ultra-quiet quartz movement, powered by one AA battery. (Not supplied.)
USES in the CLASSROOM
In a teaching situation, no other tool communicates the concept of elapsed time as well as the Time Timer. Used as an interactive teaching tool, this classroom-tested teaching aid reinforces the sense of elapsed time with a graphic depiction of the time remaining. Other teaching aids emphasize only what time looks like as a static number or a position on a clock face. The Time Timer can be used to set time limits, measure the duration of activities and train students to make better use of available time. Use the Time Timers to:
- Time standardized tests
- Monitor math and writing speed tests
- Measure study periods and lunch periods
- Show time left to play, get ready or clean up
- Exams. A TIME TIMER can be set for a maximum of 60 minutes. So when the time limit for an exam paper, for example, is more than 60 minutes the invigilator keeps time as normal on their watch of clock and then sets the TIMER for the last 60 minutes. This is the critical
time for student writing the exam and just a glance at the TIMER tells them “How much Time is left.”
- Exams. You can also get the software to use on your PC and then project in the exam room.
USES in the WORKPLACE
In the workplace and at home, time management is crucial. We may not like the fact that our lives are ruled by TIME but that‘s the way it is. Being on time, meeting deadlines and maximizing accomplishments are all functions of good time management. The Time Timer products help make the passage of time obvious and tangible whether you are in a group or individual situation. Applications in the office and at home include instances when you want to set a time limit for an activity and when you want to measure progress against time. For example, Time Timers can be used to:
- Track time during seminars, meetings, panel discussions and presentations. This is one of the most effective ways of gently controlling speakers on the podium especially if both the speaker and the audience can see the TIMER. (Speakers have a wonderful capacity to run over their allotted time!)
- Quantify time left before appointments and deadlines
- For interviews with colleagues and staff, agree on a time limit, set the TIME TIMER, and place it on the desk where you both can see it. Observe how both of you become more proficient at presenting your case and finishing the interview.
- All meetings become more time-efficient using the TIMER. (One CEO says that with the TIMER his meetings now include
considerably less waffle and more substance and as a result they are finished in half the time. Of course, when the topic is important and relevant, the smart CEO knows to ignore the TIMER.)
USE in the HOME
Children with ADHD and ADD often have difficulty in judging elapsed time. For example, getting them ready for school in the morning can be a stressful affair for all concerned. The mother saying: “We are leaving in half an hour” does not have much effect. The child sometimes wanders off and gets involved with some or other activity and has to be rounded up again, or they get ready and are constantly asking mother: “Is it time to go yet?”
A HOME TIME TIMER, placed on the fridge or in the hall, solves the problem. Child can see how much time is left and behaves accordingly. For some mothers this single use of the TIMER has made a dramatic difference to their day. (Any waiting time, be it to go to granny, go to the beach, start the homework, watch the TV is also made more pleasant.) The TIMER used to show the time to leave for school has its moments: if the child is ready and mom is not, the child really enjoys their chance to gloat! This also does something for their self-esteem and can be included in the various behaviour modification programs.
USE in COUNSELLING SESSIONS
Trainers and special education teachers have proven that Time Timer products work in both individual and group situations. With the Time Timer, users understand the passage of time and can monitor their own activities, improving their self-esteem. Better time awareness also relieves the stress and anxiety of disorientation. Special needs uses who respond well to use of the TIMER
COMMENTS from International TIME TIMER USERS
TEACHERS "An innovative and excellent way of depicting the passage of time visually. I feel that this is a must for every home and classroom." - Dr. Diane Twachtman-Cullen, nationally known educator and speaker "I have seven students (six with autism and one who has Downs Syndrome). I like using the Time Timer with my students because it does not disturb the others, some of whom are extremely noise sensitive." - Special Education Classroom Teacher "Thank you so much for your wonderful product... I am not only using your product with special needs children, but with my own at home too! I have high hopes of taking away some stress of homework time and practicing the piano." - Teacher "Hello! I really like my Time Timer, what a great idea/concept! My students (I teach kindergarten) like it because it allows them to tell how much time is left during an activity...even though they can't tell time! It is wonderful!".
Teacher "Your Time Timers are an integral part of my classroom. They are placed in every station in my classroom and my students have learned how to set them themselves. The response to this self regulating, visual system has been remarkable, reducing transition challenges profoundly. For one student in particular, it facilitated a major behavioral breakthrough, making the impending transitions understandable and tolerable. We even take our TIME TIMERS with us for outside activities! I am attempting to accomplish purchasing them for my students to use for home activities."
Teacher "I have been using your Time Timer software for several years when administering science labs, SAT testing, timed classroom presentations, etc. Both teachers and students find it easy to use and view. A great professional tool for classroom use." - Teacher
"I have used one of your Time Timers in my classroom for a number of years with great success. My students like it a great deal, even those who need the challenge of slowing down and doing a good job rather than a rushed job. Two colleagues bought them on my recommendation!" -
FAMILY USE "My sister likes the Personal Time Timer and has already seen great improvement in her daughter Meagan’s ability to make sense of time. Meagan is excited about being responsible, in fact, she times her mother and father regularly!" - Parent "This is the perfect idea for people with Alzheimer's Disease who ask 'how much time to go' questions, over and over. Congratulations on a great product." - Family Member
"Our daughter Cathie received the Time Timer today and it is a great success. Her little boy...who is six and has Asperger's Syndrome knew straight away how it worked, while Cathie was still trying to figure it out! Alex has great trouble knowing how much time has elapsed and the visual movement of the time passing is an enormous help to him." - Grandmother
"I was out yesterday due to my 5 year-old being sick anyway. The new timer works great and has made a serious improvement on getting the kids to bed at night and nap time on weekends, out of the house in the mornings for the school bus pickup and/or off to day-care. My 3 year old actually ASKS me to set the timer to 15 minutes when I tell him it's time to get ready for (whatever). Sometimes I ask him how much time he needs to do something and he will point to the timer and say the number of minutes (it's usually 15 to 25 minutes). So again, Thank you." - Parent "Thank you for such a wonderful and useful product. My son has autism and has found this a very useful resource. Today I have just ordered another desk top timer and a pocket timer. My son has been taking the timer to school, the class teacher has said that there has been a dramatic improvement in my son's ability to do and complete activities. I forgot to take the timer this week and a few of the other children and the teacher said that they really missed the timer as it helped them too. Hence the additional order!!! Thank you again!" - Parent
"I'm looking forward to getting the replacement personal timer that I can carry around with me. My 4 year old and I are really enjoying our regular timer. I can see how it's helping her learn the concept of elapsed time and deadlines. As an adult with ADD, who has been chronically late her entire life, I can also say that the visual depiction of time is helping me. I use it mainly when I'm getting ready for work, and I can tell a difference in my time perception. It's amazing that something so basic can help so much. You have an amazing invention, and I appreciate your sharing it with us. I work with adults with brain injuries who have similar time management issues, and I'm telling everyone I know about the TIMER. Once I get my personal timer, I can take it around to my client visits and team meetings where I can show it off to both clients and treatment professionals. Maybe it will generate some orders for you." - Parent
"I just wanted to thank you for your terrific product. Your timer has greatly aided my husband and I in getting our two-year old daughter in to bed and nap time and at bed time. Of course, no product would do the trick without behavioral follow-up, but she can easily comprehend that the "red time" is "going away." It only took us two nights of tantrums at bedtime when all her time was gone before she learned the connection between the timer and our insistence that she get in bed. Although this sounds corny, naptime and bedtime is so much more a pleasure now. She visually sees that her time is gone and is so much more cooperative about stopping whatever before bed-time activity we are doing and getting into bed. It is also great that the timer is not a clock in that we may not always start our bedtime routine at exactly the same time each night. It's close but not exact. Because it is a timer, we can adjust the amount of "red time" to about the same amount even if we are ten minutes later getting out of the bath. I also give her some auditory cues at 15 minutes, 10 minutes, 5 minutes, and 1 minute. Again, thank you for your wonderful product. I have told several of my friends and plan to mention it to any clients who are having difficulties with their children at bedtime (I'm a psychologist)." - Parent / Psychologist
STUDENTS "I like the Time Timer. I am 11 years old and I have ADD. I like it because I know how much longer 'til my friend will be here. We bought two of the Time Timer. One for home and one for school. It helps me stay calmed down." - 11 Year-Old Boy
WORKPLACE "Since using the Time Timer, my meetings have never been more efficient or effective. People actually want to attend because I don’t waste their time." - Corporate Department Head
THERAPISTS "We spoke on the phone last week about Bittersweet Farms ordering additional Time Timers for use at our facility for adults with autism. We have had several timers in use for 4+ years and they continue to be wonderful tools and supports for our individuals. I am especially happy to hear of the 3 inch model since we are a farm community and our participants spend a lot of time in different outdoor occupations. The pocket-sized timer will travel and be used all over our 88 acres!" - Janice Cline, M.S., CCC-SLP "I love your visual timer. It has been especially useful in working with children with ADD and traumatic brain injuries." - OTR "Thank you so much for everything! Our private practice is celebrating its 25th year and we have 13 Speech Pathologists associated with our practice. I am truly impressed with your products and, now, getting to know your great customer service. You can be sure that we are and will be recommending and demonstrating your wonderful inventions!" - Speech Language Pathologist and Learning Disabilities Specialist
